Netflix have unveiled a brand-new trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy – and as well as showing some epic new footage, it also features Gerard’s cover of Hazy Shade Of Winter as its soundtrack.
The Umbrella Academy – which is premiering next month on February 15 – will be airing as a 10-episode run, and features some amazing names: Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, Tom Hopper, Cameron Britton, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Adam Godley, Aidan Gallagher, Kate Walsh, David Castaneda, John Magaro, Ashley Madekwe, and Colm Feore. Now, you can watch them all in action below in a ridiculously exciting new promo.
Recently, Gerard praised Netflix for keeping “the weird ideas” in the show, and also revealed that he sadly doesn’t make any appearances in Umbrella Academy, adding that he’s “become a little camera shy over the years”.
“What I did for Steve Blackman [the showrunner] and the writers in that first writers room was to create an 18-page document that laid everything out – even of the graphic novels that haven’t come out yet, which should equal eight when we’re all done,” Gerard explains when asked if he had to present a “five-year plan” to Netflix when the idea first came about. “So I gave them the blueprint for what happens, because you do want to seed certain things in there for future series, and the hope is that it’s a success so that you do a lot more of these. Everybody is always very curious what Gabriel and I are doing next. We always send them the new comics. They really want to know what’s happening.”
“First and foremost, I wanted to ground the characters,” Steve Blackman tells Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a very busy landscape of superhero stories. When I first looked at the graphic novel, to me, it was a dysfunctional family show. In fact I had the logline, when I first pitched it to Netflix, that it’s ‘a dysfunctional family show with a body count.’ I was very inspired by Wes Anderson and The Royal Tenenbaums, and I wanted to give it that feel, make it very cinematic and set it to music, which was a big part of it, and really make it stand out from Marvel/DC fare. All of those shows are great but I really wanted this to feel different, make it feel like they’re very imperfect and the family’s struggling.” Watch the official trailer for Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy below.
