Are My Chemical Romance teasing new song titles?

Is My Chemical Romance’s recent online activity simply just to promote next year’s North American stadium tour? Hmm, we think not…

Earlier this week, My Chemical Romance returned with a surprise teaser before announcing a 10-date North American stadium tour. But since then, they’ve continued on with some cryptic posts – and it’s starting to look like they might be building towards something even bigger…

Announcing the tour – which goes by the name ‘Long Live’ – the beloved emo kings shared a blurb on Tuesday about how things have changed and developed since their iconic concept album The Black Parade’s release (“In that time, a great Dictator has risen to power, bringing about ‘THE CONCRETE AGE’; a glorious time of stability and abundance in the history of DRAAG,” reads one sentence). Along with a cinematic teaser video pointing to a wider story, it obviously piqued our interest.

But it hasn’t stopped there. Since then, they’ve shared a photo of a dog on Instagram, with a new logo (that either means MCR, or is the initials of their scrapped The Paper Kingdom album) and the caption ‘Good Boy.’ They also shared another video with the caption ‘Opera.’ Are they drip-feeding us song titles for a new album?! Excitingly, fans on Reddit have noted that these may refer to certain unreleased tracks from The Paper Kingdom – apparently that record had songs entitled Dogs (which lines up with the ‘Good Boy’ post) and Operation Day (which obviously includes the word ‘Opera’).

If you think that might be a stretch, there’s more. The video count on the band’s YouTube has apparently gone up, but there’s nothing new we can see – so it might mean that something has been uploaded but put as either unlisted or private.

My Chemical Romance started working on The Paper Kingdom after Danger Days, before breaking up in 2013. In Kerrang!’s own telling of that unreleased record, we previously explained that it “conceptually centred around the story of a support group made up of parents whose children had died. Unsurprisingly, those present at the sessions described it as the darkest music My Chemical Romance had ever written, with comparisons drawn to experimental alt-rockers Radiohead. A bleak shadow had been cast over the band, and they were making music that, according to Gerard’s close friend and comic book writer Grant Morrison, didn’t sound anything like the MCR we know and love.”
