The track is taken from the band’s conceptual upcoming mixtape JAY, which deals with various strands of mental health – and specifically how it affects people in the UK, where the Southend quintet are from.

“Inspired by artist like Eminem, Strickland Banks and Ren, I wanted to get across the feeling of psychosis in this song,” San Quentin say of their newest single. “The story of Charlie [which is previously mentioned in the mixtape’s opening song 10:33] giving in to those voices, and coming off the medication the doctor has prescribed. Charlie is fundamentally a schizophrenic, and JAY the embodiment of the evil voice in Charlie’s head. Charlie uses JAY as an excuse for his life falling apart and his broken relationships. When writing JAY it basically set the tone for the whole concept, I wanted to branch off and make the mixtape as a whole, a cinematic experience.

“Overall this song tells the all-too-common story of the mental health crisis we face in the UK. Hopefully bringing a voice to the silenced.”
