Stream the debut three-track EP from Sol Invicto, featuring members of Deftones and Cypress Hill
“We wanted to create something gritty, heavy and authentic…” Listen to Loosely Aware, the new EP from Sol Invicto.
We hate to admit it, but this Deftones/Britney combination has its cool moments.
Most of the time, mash-ups of metal and pop songs are good for a quick laugh and nothing more. But every so often, you get one where the songs work well enough together that it's somewhat of a decent listen. For example, one YouTuber's mash-up of Deftones' Change (In The House Of Flies) and Britney Spears' Toxic has emerged, and we hate to say it, but… it's not terrible.
Oddly enough, what makes the two tracks work so well together is their slower, slinkier elements. Obviously, Change is a huge, crushing hard rock track, but its verse parts are languid and strung out. Toxic, meanwhile, has string accents and falsetto vocal moments that sound typical in a pop song, but are kind of haunting when backed by Deftones. The result feels like two different angles of a drug stupor, and will no doubt confuse some metal fans with how cool it is.

This mash-up is just one of a large crop of decent -- and terrible -- song combinations that have come out this year. There was also Slayer's mash-up with Wham!, Tool's mash-up with Taylor Swift, and the unspeakable horror that is Play That Funky Music Rammstein. That said, none of them are quite as good as this one in terms of sheer listenability.
Meanwhile, Deftones have a big couple of months ahead of them. Not only are the band working on their new album, but they're getting ready to headline their Dia De Los Deftones festival in San Diego, California. The festival, to go down Saturday, November 2nd, will feature acts including CHVRCHES, Gojira, JPEGMAFIA, Hum, Youth Code, and more.
