They gave what is still known as 'The New Song' its world premiere – having only performed the track four times in their career in total – as well playing a cover of The Ramones' Commando with tour buddies Avenged Sevenfold. Elsewhere, of course, there's all the hits that you'd expect from Papa Het and co., from One, to Enter Sandman, to Seek & Destroy. All in all, then, an absolute rager of a set!
While the Metallica Mondays streams are typically kicked off with an introduction from one of the band, this time a trailer for their upcoming S&M2 release was played first.
“It was one of the most powerful experiences that I’ve ever had,” bassist Rob Trujillo tells Kerrang! of the two S&M2 gigs. “You’re surrounded by all these stringed instruments and there’s a lot of power in that. It lifts you and you almost feel like you’re flying. It’s almost like this sonic journey that you take with these musicians who probably feel something similar, even though they feel it all the time. It was really special as a musician to experience that side of the sonic spectrum.”
Metallica & San Francisco Symphony: S&M2 is out August 28 via Blackened Recordings.
