Metallica Announce S&M2 Details And Unveil Official Trailer

After months of teasing, Metallica have finally announced that both the audio and video releases for their epic S&M2 shows will be coming on August 28.

To coincide with the full details for S&M2 being unveiled – including the tracklist, pre-order details and various bundle options – the metal titans have launched the first official trailer for their epic S&M2 shows, which took place with the incredible San Francisco Symphony at the Chase Center on September 6 and 8, 2019.

Speaking exclusively to Kerrang! about those two memorable nights, bassist Rob Trujillo reflects on bringing the power of orchestral music to metalheads: “…You’re sharing something that’s hopefully educating and helping a thrash metal fan to understand that this is going on too, and it’s very powerful. We might not even be onstage at that moment but I really believe everybody came out of that show with a heightened sense of not just respect, but knowing they experienced something special. For me, that was the goal and I think we achieved it both nights.”

Previously, drummer Lars Ulrich also chatted to Kerrang! about his highlights from the gigs – which saw Metallica perform with an orchestra some 20 years after the original S&M album.

“The Anesthesia bass solo was incredible,” he said. “The way the fans reacted to that was goosebump-city. I loved the dare of playing Iron Foundry. I loved revisiting songs we don’t play so often like The Outlaw Torn and The Call Of Ktulu. I loved how Edwin [Outwater] brought one sort of dynamic when he was conducting the more rock stuff, and how Michael Tilson Thomas – the maestro, the elder statesman of his world – brought in some different pieces and encouraged the fans to understand where the symphonic and rock worlds overlap.

“Most of all, though, the fact that there was no barricade stood out. When was the last time you went to a rock show of that size without one? What does that barricade do? What does it mean? It’s a safety thing, but in essence it’s something that separates people. I loved just being able to walk out with the fans. At one point I leaned back and let myself go into their embrace. That was a great moment.”
