Korn's Munky on nu-metal's big 2021 releases: "The people making the music still have their hearts in it"

In this week's Kerrang! Cover Story we celebrate the return of the mighty Korn, and look ahead to the release of their highly-anticipated new album Requiem.

But it's not only the Bakersfield legends who have been delivering the goods for nu-metal fans this year: very recently, Limp Bizkit finally dropped their first album in a decade, Still Sucks, and Slipknot unleashed new tune The Chapeltown Rag.

So, what's with nu-metal's biggest bands making such a resurgence in 2021?

"The people making the music still have their hearts in it," Korn guitarist James 'Munky' Shaffer explains. "[Limp Bizkit and Slipknot] love what they do and we love what we do – and the audience senses that. No matter how much certain people are negative about it, the listeners are the ultimate judge and jury.”

Indeed, frontman Jonathan Davis tells Kerrang! that creating Requiem – even all these years into their career – was a process that he and his bandmates absolutely loved.

"We’ve been together 27 fucking years but I still get excited to see them," the vocalist says. "We’re still like those 24-year-old kids making that first record, we still get that excited."
