Eddie Van Halen has passed away at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer
Eddie Van Halen has passed away at the age of 65.
The Van Halen co-founder and legendary guitarist died of cancer on October 6, as confirmed by his son, Wolfgang, on Instagram.
"I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning," wrote Wolfgang.
"He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.
"My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss.
"I love you so much, Pop."
Tributes for the guitar icon are being paid by fans and musicians across social media.
"Rest In Peace to one of the truly greatest musicians of all time," posted Trivium's Matt Heafy. "My first guitar hero – the guitarist I grew up listening to in car rides with my family – a man I excitedly share the same birth date and month with: Mr. Eddie Van Halen."
"Oh man, bless his beautiful creative heart," said Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea. "I love you Eddie Van Halen, an LA boy, a true rocker. I hope you jam with Jimi tonight. Break through to the other side my brother."
Kerrang! would like to send our condolences to Eddie's family and friends at this time.
