These Are The Kinds Of Instagram DMs Female Punk Musicians Receive From Strangers
Punk rockers The Bombpops reveal the worst IG messages they've received from random folks online.
Exclusive: The new album by San Diego's The Bombpops is a polished chunk of cheetah-print pop-punk.
To paraphrase Suicide from Return Of The Living Dead, for the Bombpops this ain't a costume, it's a way of life. The Southern Californian four-piece's pop-punk may sound polished and listenable to some, but its themes are all about the real human struggle this band faces every day. Similarly, though the Bombpops may be all neon colors and tiki-bar class in their photos, the band aren't afraid to show off the ugly truth of everyday life -- something that frontwomen Poli Van Dam and Jen Razavi made clear last year when they broke the Internet by reading aloud the kinds of sick Instagram DMs they get from random men.
With their new album Death In Venice Beach, the Bombpops provide the ultimate display of their two-headed approach. Sonically, the record is catchy, sweet, and easy to get stuck in your head, full of big choruses and bouncing riffs. Thematically, though, songs like Zero Remorse and Blood Pact illustrate just how much the quartet has lived through, and exactly how much blood, sweat, tears, and raw flesh go into surviving the modern day.

"Death In Venice Beach ended up being a collection of tales of our reveling in the dark," say the band. "Under the guise of pop-punk, we aimed to sprinkle light across some pretty shadowy themes. The idea is that if you look closely, you can find beauty all around, even in places where it shouldn’t exist. Hopefully, this album will be a companion to listeners who might be walking through their own darkness. We’d like it to hold their hand and force a smile, or at least a smirk, on their face because sometimes you have to accept the looming thoughts into your heart before you can let them go."
