Album review: Our Hollow, Our Home – Burn In The Flood

The British metalcore scene is in a fine state in 2021. With Bring Me The Horizon cracking the mainstream, Architects at Number One, and bands like While She Sleeps and Bury Tomorrow continuing to scale things up, a clear path has been forged for newer metal acts to follow. Our Hollow, Our Home are one such band who’ve been bubbling away in the background in recent years, with 2018 LP In Moment / / In Memory arriving to great acclaim. It was a good record, no doubt, but Burn In The Flood, is an even stronger statement of intent.

Speaking of strength, Burn In The Flood demonstrates Our Hollow, Our Home’s mighty metallic crunch from the outset. After the title-track kicks things off in rapturous fashion, Failsafe, Monarch and the titanic Children Of Manus all deliver a glorious barrage of riffs, growls and aggression, but it’s in their more melodic moments where Our Hollow, Our Home truly shine. Recent single Better Daze and, in particular, Overcast showcase the emotive power of the band, with the heartfelt lyrics of the latter – ‘Never did I think I’d become so hollow / I’m not ok and that’s a bitter pill to swallow’ – adding to Burn In The Flood’s sense of purpose and poignancy.

The end result is comfortably Our Hollow, Our Home’s best work yet, and one which shows the potential they have within them.
