Kill Hannah Release Open Letter To UK Fans

Ahead of their farewell shows in the UK, Kill Hannah have written an open letter to their British fans thanking them for years of support.

In an exclusive statement, lead singer and founding member Mat Devine has given his account of the bands career from humble beginnings in Chicago to breaking into the British rock scene. Read his letter below:

We are all fans. I started Kill Hannah nearly two decades ago as an avid devotee of mostly English bands (The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Sex Pistols, Joy Division, Catherine Wheel, Ride, Slowdive, etc) and one of my greatest goals was to, one day, get to the UK and perform in the country of my musical heroes. I even sang with a slight faux accent and pretentiously insisted on spelling words like “colour” the proper way.

In Chicago, believe me, we put in the blood, sweat and tears… It was a hard-won, long-fought battle over MANY years to carve a name for ourselves, building a loyal local fan base (who looked and felt as alien as we did).

The only thing to ever rival our hometown pride was the euphoria we felt when we FINALLY flew in to Heathrow, and arrived at our first UK venues to see OUR fans, waiting in the classically bitter rain, wearing home-made KH T-shirts.

We instantly knew we had a second home, and we committed to making it our biggest priority.

Outside of Chicago, NO ONE cheered harder, sang louder, and connected more with us than the UK fans. (In fact, my favorite show of all time was at the Manchester Academy in 2007, where security could not keep the stampede of sweat-drenched, smiling teenagers from the stage, and we played the entire set laughing in disbelief, from inside what looked like a scene from an epic battle movie.)

I want you to know what that does to a band. I want you to know how much your enthusiasm shaped and inspired us, and I want to say… THANK YOU.

We are all still thick as thieves, and so the decision to disband did not come easily, but it was a choice to go out on our terms, and to give the story of Kill Hannah a dignified ending. Before we close the book, we felt it was imperative to play some select final shows, and the ONLY places we chose, to match the significance of the event, are in Chicago and the UK.

We see these shows as a celebration of the rich, bizarre, beautiful ride we’ve had that, in a large part, the UK fans made possible… We can’t wait to get over there to hyperventilate with you all DEC 3, 4, 5 and 6th…

See you very soon.

Love, Mat, Greg, Johnny, Dan and Elias.”
