Check out the first trailer for the new Mario Bros. movie starring Jack Black

The last time Hollywood tried a Super Mario Bros. movie it was a disaster. The 1993 film was sort of onto a halfway decent idea casting the late Bob Hoskins as the titular Italian plumber and Goomba stomping hero, but everything else about it was just weird. Envisioned as a sort of Ghostbusters thing, what you actually got was lizards in mafia suits and Dennis Hopper for once not being a very good bad guy. It lost millions.

Well GOOD NEWS! Nintendo and Illumination (of Minions fame) have teamed up to have another go, and the trailer looks amazing. Not least because it actually looks like The Mushroom Kingdom, and not like you're watching Jurassic Park set in Brooklyn. Also, Tenacious D man Jack Black plays Bowser, which is a winner.

The flick also features Chris Pratt (Jurassic Park, Parks And Recreation) as Mario, and Anya Taylor-Joy (The VVitch, Last Night In Soho) as Princess Peach. Not sure what's going on with Mario's voice, but it's fine. Also: you didn't know how much you needed the idea of Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, did you?

It's out in April 2023. Don't watch the other Mario movie in preparation...
