Irish thrashers Gama Bomb are raising money for Doctors Without Borders with their ridiculous Christmas ditty…
‘He’s making a fist / He’s decking you twice / He’s gonna find out / You’re bang to rights…’
Good news: Gama Bomb have done a Christmas single. Never mind that it’s taken the perennially silly Irish thrash mob 20-something years to do such a thing, A Coffin For Christmas is here now, and its dark comedy tale of bad powerful bastards getting filled-in by Santa is exactly what you’d expect. Not only that, but all the money raised through streams, digital sales and Coffin For Christmas shirts goes to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who are helping those in need in the likes of Gaza and Sudan.
“We always said we’d rather die than do a Christmas song because they’re so cynical,” admits singer Philly Byrne. “But then a few things came together – a spare song from the recording sessions for our last album, BATS, this fun title, and honestly the urge to raise money for charity at a time of year when people are hopefully feeling generous. So we broke the rule, but hopefully for good reasons.”
On the lyrics, Philly adds: “Looking at the world in 2024, it can feel like a few big, powerful and morally corrupt people are having their ‘fun’ with nobody willing to stop them. With this song, I was imagining that Santa might use his powers to deliver a bit of justice to those world leaders. It’s an empowering feeling, I just wish it would come true. Maybe next year. I feel like metal has very few good Christmas songs, so we wanted to take our shot with something catchy and fun.”
