Candid Photographs Of The Icelandic Black Metal Scene Featured In New Book
Iceland – despite (or possibly because of) its geographic isolation – has seen an extraordinary flourishing of its black metal scene in the last 20 years.
Subculture publishing house Ditto's new photobook Svartmálmur is a portrait of the Icelandic black metal scene by photographer Verði ljós, the alter-ego of Hafsteinn Viðar Ársælsson, founder of solo black metal project Wormlust.
Iceland – despite (or possibly because of) its geographic isolation – has seen an extraordinary flourishing of its black metal scene in the last 20 years. Arguably a reaction to the cold reality of a country all too often presented to the outside world as a kind of magical land, the scene has gained considerable recognition and boasts a key position in the worldwide metal scene.
Today, Iceland is home to renowned black metal record labels, festivals (including Oration and Eistnaflug), as well as internationally acclaimed bands. Svartmálmur features images of bands Abominor, Auðn, Carpe Noctem, Draugsól, Mannveira, Misþyrming, Naðra, Norn, Nornahetta, Núll, Nyiþ, Sinmara, Svartidauði and Wormlust, as well as a selection of lyrics.
The photographs in the book have been taken over three years. Seamlessly blending documentary and fiction, Svartmálmuroffers a unique insight into this apparently impenetrable world.
