Angels & Airwaves' New Song Sounds Like Box Car Racer, According To Tom DeLonge

Tom Delonge has teased a short snippet of a new song he’s been working on for Angels & Airwaves. In a clip posted to his Instagram, Tom can be seen in a room full of musical equipment as he plays a segment of a new track.

That’s exciting enough in its own right, but what’s really intriguing are the finer details. The caption of the post reads: “Recording @angelsandairwaves today… #KindOfSoundsLikeBoxCarRacer”

Box Car Racer was the short-lived, post-hardcore-inspired project Tom founded with blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and David Kennedy, who would become a founding member of Angels & Airwaves when that band was formed a few years later.

And Tom’s right – the guitars heard in the clip are much heavier than those usually heard on Angels & Airwaves songs, and much more redolent of that Box Car Racer record.

Tom’s post even inspired Travis to respond with a good-humoured quip: “Never will sound like BOX CAR RACER without me," he wrote playfully.

There hasn’t yet been an announcement about a new Angels & Airwaves record, so it’s all very early days, but does this mean a Box Car Racer reunion could be on the cards? It’s probably unlikely, but anything is possible.

After all, at some of the shows on Angels & Airwaves’ recent U.S. tour, Tom did play a medley of songs by his other bands that, in addition to blink-182’s I Miss You and Aliens Exist, also included a snippet of Box Car Racer’s There Is. Whatever his intentions, it’s all very exciting.

For us, anyway. Tom is probably more stoked about the fact that his To The Stars Academy, whose videos of UFOs were recently acknowledged and verified by the U.S. Navy, has signed a deal with the U.S. Army to enhance exploration into extra-terrestrial activity. Which, to be fair, is pretty damn cool.
