Album review: Guerilla Warfare – C O N T R O L

The words rap and metal when placed together will elicit a groan from most people, but don’t be too quick to judge. Guerrilla Warfare are the first signing to Jason Aalon Butler’s (FEVER 333, letlive.) label, 333 Wreckords Crew, and their approach is assertive, yet carefully considered.

The Kentucky-based trio made an explosive impact in 2019 with the release of their first EP, C O N S U M E. They’re now back with follow-up C O N T R O L, a two-part concept record that aims to explore the duality between the human psyche and society and convey the feeling of frustration that stems from believing you’ve fallen behind in life. From start to finish this is an opus that will keep you on your toes. It’s chaotic, unpredictable and, above all else, concise.

Guerrilla Warfare waste no time with intros, instead taking a no-frills approach to giving their listeners an audial kick in the teeth, and don’t relent. Drummer and vocalist Garrett Hood switches between hardcore style screams and effortlessly flowed raps without faltering, remaining seamless in spite of the sharp twists and turns of the music itself. One moment there are jarring, crackled electronics surging forth from the speakers, the next you’re thrown head first into a monstrously chug-filled breakdown.

It’s a hell of a ride to embark upon, but expertly holds up a mirror to the unrest and uncertainty that society has endured over the past few years.

Verdict: 3/5
