Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Guitar To Go Up For Auction With Starting Bid Of $1m
You can own the guitar Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged performance.
Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged guitar is set to feature in an upcoming Music Icons auction next month, with an estimated starting bid of $1million.
The 1959 Martin D-18E was famously used by the frontman during Nirvana's iconic MTV Unplugged In New York performance in 1993, though was originally purchased by Kurt with a vintage hard-shell case at Voltage Guitars in Los Angeles. The auction for the guitar will also include the case, as well as three Dunlop guitar picks and a "partial" set of strings.
“Julien’s Auctions is proud to offer this historic guitar from Kurt Cobain, who upended the music industry and pop culture at large with his mythic performance fronting Nirvana on MTV Unplugged in New York,” says Julien’s Auctions CEO Darren Julien.

“This important guitar has earned its rightful place in rock‘n’roll history as the instrument played by one of rock’s most influential musicians and icons in one of the greatest and most memorable live performances of all time.”
Elsewhere in the auction – which is taking place from June 19-20 – the MTV Unplugged setlist will also be available to bid on, as well as the shirt Kurt wore during Nirvana's Heart-Shaped Box music video, and a guitar the frontman smashed during their In Utero tour in 1994.
Last year, Julien’s Auctions held their Icons & Idols: Rock ‘N’ Roll auction, selling the unwashed sweater that Kurt wore during Unplugged for $334,000.
