Kirk Hammett Has "A Lot Of Really Kick-Ass, Great Material" For The Next Metallica Album

While it seems as though as new Metallica record will be a while off (especially given that frontman James Hetfield recently re-entered a treatment program to work on his recovery from addiction), guitarist Kirk Hammett has revealed just how much great material he has for album number 11.

The six-stringer famously lost a phone containing some 500 musical ideas ahead of the making of ’Tallica's latest record – the brilliant Hardwired… To Self-Destruct – meaning that he ended up contributing little to the final product. Therefore, he says, he's "overcompensated" this time around.

“I have a lot of stuff written that I’ve put aside for the band – a lot of stuff,” Kirk tells Cosmo Music.

“Because last album, I didn’t have any stuff, ’cause I lost most of my ideas when I lost my phone – over 500 musical ideas… It took me a long time to recover from that. And I got it into my head I had to produce twice as much – basically, I overcompensated. So, as it stands, as we speak, I have a lot of material – really kick-ass, great material – that I just can’t wait to show the other guys and turn into some music, record, get the album out and have more kick-ass metal.”

While we're not sure what it might sound like just yet, Kirk recently told Kerrang! about his favourite Metallica guitar solo – and how he likes "spontaneity".

“I was thinking about the solo in The Unforgiven,” he said. “I remember showing up to the studio that morning, thinking I was going to play all these certain licks and then [Black Album producer] Bob Rock’s going, ‘That’s fucking crap.’ Then it was one of the very first times when I said, ‘Just fucking hit the record button,’ and shit flowed out. I prefer to record my solos that way now because I like the spontaneity of it; that’s how that solo was pretty much created.”
