Here’s Metallica’s setlist from the first night of their M72 World Tour

From Sad But True to King Nothing to Lux Æterna – here’s what Metallica played in the opening night of their M72 World Tour.

Tonight, Metallica kicked off the first date of their epic M72 World Tour in Amsterdam at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The first of two shows they're playing the Dutch capital (the second is this Saturday), where they'll be playing two completely different setlists.

Not including their turns on Howard Stern and Jimmy Kimmel, this first night of the tour also marks the debut performances of brand-new tracks from the Four Horsemen's new album 72 Seasons, including Sleepwalk My Life Away and Screaming Suicide.

In a setlist full of surprises – opening on Orion?! – the band delved into their back catalogue, even bringing out King Nothing and The Day That Never Comes.

Metallica's M72 Tour will take them throughout Europe this summer, headlining two nights in each city (including a double-headline slot at Download Festival), performing 100 per cent different sets.

Who knows what the future will bring from such an ambitious tour, and a band who love to shake things up, but we tonight's show in Amsterdam is a pretty solid indication of where their heads are at, and what we can expect down the line...
