EP Review: Drown This City – Colours We Won’t Know

Aussie metalcore crew Drown This City have returned with an EP of six solid bangers, a dynamic and cinematic collection of songs that reaches surprising heights. Wisely, they've bookended it with its strongest songs. Gemini starts the album off softly with its ethereal chorus of voices, before shifting into heavier territory, accompanied by soaring vocals, showing off the band's skill when it comes to deftly handling transitions.

They aren't afraid to go super-heavy, either, as on Carbon14 and Time Won’t Remember Us, but they can also go feather-soft, like the jaw-dropping light moments interspersed through Borderline Existence. The band do an exceptional job of contrasting these two sides of their sound thanks to the prowess of their vocalists: Alex Reade is a powerhouse, her clean vocals nicely balanced by Toby Thomas’ formidable scream.

This is a band firing on all cylinders. Guitarists Josh Renjen and Laurence Appleby supply some show-stealing riffs throughout the EP, and particularly on Gemini and Carbon14. It’s an impressive effort, one that spells big things for a future full-length.
