Album Review: Godthrymm – Reflections
Yorkshire doom trio Godthrymm deliver a delightfully gloomy, powerfully metal debut…
As a man who’s done time as guitarist in Brit doom legends My Dying Bride and Solstice, Hamish Glencross knows a thing or two about mournful metal riffs and sweeping vastness. Thus, his new outfit, Godthrymm, are entirely unsurprising in their dedication to all things dark and doomy.
But with moments of cleverness scattered throughout, songs like opener Monsters Lurk Herein and the excellent The Sea As My Grave also possess hidden depths to be unlocked with each listen. There’s also a sense of straight-up metalness among the gloom that makes you want to put your fist in the air, albeit very slowly, á la Swedish epic doom legends Candlemass. But even then, the overwhelming layer of oppressive murk hanging heavy over everything leaves even the most powerful and mighty moments drenched in a weighty gloom.
It’s a killer start to a new chapter, and a record that will have disciples rejoicing.
Verdict 4/5
