Album Review: Giver – Sculpture Of Violence
German hardcore crew Giver bring heaviness and more on Sculpture Of Violence
Despite its ominous title, shades of darkness and lyrics that talk about exploitative labour and religious discord, this second album from German hardcore quintet Giver is a deceptively vibrant collection. There are plenty of desolate screams and bleak guitars, but these 10 tracks are underpinned by a keen ear for melody, resulting in an immediate, energetic record whose sheer power resonates long after it comes to a close.
The best moments arrive early on, with opener Night Season characterised by vigorous riffs and impactful vocals, while the title-track’s raging metallic punk is another rampant highlight. The massive gang shouts sprinkled throughout add to the sense of combative euphoria, but Giver leave space for a little despair too, notably on the excellent These Words Are Rain, which is shrouded in grim darkness. Elsewhere, doomy passages and touches of blackgaze cast shadows further.
Violence may be a big ingredient, but Giver prove there’s far more to them than sheer aggression here.
Verdict: 4/5
